Update

CAN XL data link layer and physical coding sub‑layer

Important notes

CiA released a new CiA 610-1 document as Dragt Specification PRoposal, specifying the CAN XL data link layer (DLL) and the physical coding sub-layer (PCS).

The separation of the 11-bit priority field and the 32-bit acceptance field is new. The classic CAN and CAN FD with the 11-bit or 29-bit identified gives unique priority for accessing the network and indication of the data field content.

Improvements

On the other hand, CAN XL provides several embedded high-layer information, the SDU, and the VCID, similar functions to Ethernet-based networks.

The PCS now provides an optional PWM (puls-width modulation) coding that allows bit-rates higher than 10 Mbit/s. The error signaling can be switched off, thus higher layers should signal if they receive XL frames with errors.
