Can an IO-Link sensor be replaced with a "normal" one?

What happens if an IO-Link proximity switch is defective and no equivalent replacement is available?

An IO-Link proximity switch (one switching output) can also be replaced by a corresponding standard proximity switch.

Then automatic identification, parameter re-setting and other communication functions are not possible, then the proximity sensor works as well as the relay. it just gives a switch signal
