Since PROFINET is an Ethernet-based solution and uses Ethernet for its communication standard, you will notice Ethernet components, including switches, cables, and connectors that are linking PROFINET devices.
All Ethernet switches in a PROFINET network, are working to switch all the Ethernet traffic, regardless of the application in use - the equipment is transmitting Ethernet traffic from many various sources.
So the PROFINET is compatible with standard Ethernet switches that are fulfilling the minimum requirements of 100 Mbit/s with a full-duplex transmission.
As I mentioned before, besides PROFINET the Ethernet-based protocols can employ multiple protocols, such as MQTT, SNMP, OPC UA, or HTTP.
A particular Ethernet switch can also function as a PROFINET device, wherein in this case the PROFINET switch device will look like a PLC or an I/O.
The PROFINET switch device will have a GSD file like any other PROFINET device, defining the diagnostic information.
The diagnostics information is very valuable if the switch is Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) device because if it reports a failure in the ring the PLC can alarm it and take action. It pinpoints where the break is located, thus simplifying the maintenance response and minimizing the downtime.
Some vendors supply Ethernet switches capable of active and PROFINET IO devices.
