PROFINET
Can PROFINET be routed?
Can any PROFINET messages be sent over a Layer 3 router - intentionally passing into different IP networks?
Can any PROFINET messages be sent over a Layer 3 router - intentionally passing into different IP networks?
A PROFINET network communicates in two possible ways: TCP/IP or via the PROFINET real-time channel.
The PROFINET real-time channel skips the TCP/IP portion, using the Layers 1, 2, and 7 of the OSI stack as other Fieldbuses do to reduce jitter. However, because it doesn't use IP, it cannot pass through a Layer 3 router.
To avoid these issues, PROFINET CBA (Component Based Automation) enables the use of TCP/IP communications that makes PROFINET data routable.
As an answer to the question, PROFINET can be routed by using the CBA.
