How does BACnet handle device discovery and management in a building automation system?
BACnet uses a process called "device discovery" to enable devices on a BACnet network to identify and communicate with each other. Device discovery in BACnet can be accomplished using one of several different mechanisms.
One of the most common mechanisms for BACnet device discovery is the Who-Is/IAm mechanism. When a BACnet device is added to a network, it sends out a Who-Is broadcast message asking for the device ID of other devices on the network. Any BACnet device that hears this message responds with an IAm message that includes its device ID, allowing the new device to identify and communicate with the existing devices on the network.
