What is the difference between KNX and DALI?

DALI is a well-known lighting control protocol, capable of being used as an independent one or in combination with KNX. DALI offers to address individual ballasts in lines of up to 64 devices for light level control and reporting.

DALI advantages - No radial circuit requirements with simple topology, requiring less board space distribution and allowing smooth dimming curves.

DALI disadvantages - estimate between 50-100% cost increase over traditional phase dimming, not simple to test, diagnose, and commission, with "send and forgot" strategy without a guarantee for any lost telegram.

This is where KNX comes into play. It provides the same functionalities as DALI systems with no need for the individual addressing of each light fixture, thus providing a huge cost saving in absence of special ballast fitting. KNX focuses on the inputs, such as Sensors, Switches, and Thermostats, and controls the outputs as banks of fittings. As an example, in one classroom, each of the light rows can be represented by a separate dimming circuit, controlled with a multi-channel light sensor.

In conclusion, KNX saves money, offering a better control level and a more secure setup.
