A drop can be made between your own devices or Amazon contacts (but must be unlocked from both sides first). In contrast to a call, however, it does not have to be accepted.

And audio quality is then as if I would hear someone over the speakerphone, right?

Yes, you just hear everything that is within the range of the respective other echo device. Of course there can be more noise in the process.
