How to setup Gira X1 for remote access?

For remote access, you can use the OpenVPN app and the Gira device portal that provide Dynamic DNS services and makes your devices permanently accessible on the internet, regardless of the IP address.

Therefore, the Gira X1 mini server is assigned a fixed name in the device portal.

To start with the Gira X1 mini server Network Settings, follow these steps:

• Register your Gira X1 mini server on the Gira device portal (https://geraeteportal.gira.de/)
• Enable and set up the Dynamic DNS service on the portal and assign your device a hostname and project password
• On your router, you need to route the port you have selected for the installer in the project settings to the Gira X1 IP address (with UDP protocol)
• Route the port for the user in the project settings to the Gira X1 IP address (with UDP protocol)

The setup continues with the Gira Project Assistant:

• In the Project Settings view, active the functions "Use VPN server" and "Use Gira device portal"
• The Portal address from the Gira device portal should be already entered there (do not change it)
• For the Host Name, you can enter the hostname that you've set in the Gira device portal (the name is consisted of what you have set up + ".giradns.com", for example, MyGiraServer.giradns.com - where MyGiraServer is the hostname you have entered on the device portal)
• Start the commissioning
• Restart your Gira X1 mini server in the Action Center
• Switch to the "Building and devices" view and double-click on the Gira X1 located in the project, and click "Show diagnostic page"
• Go to the diagnostic page bottom and click on the "Download user client config"
• The downloaded file is named user.ovpn is containing all of the required VPN setups
• You can send this file to the user's mobile phone

For the mobile phone setup, the Gira X1 app and the OpenVPN Connect app from OpenVPN Technologies must be installed on the user's phone:

• Click on the file that you have sent to that phone (probably as an email)
• When the file opens, select "Copy to OpenVPN"
• After the OpenVPN Connect app will open, click on the + sign
• You need to enter the user ID and password that are created in the GPA
• Save the settings
• Open the Gira X1 app and switch to the system menu - "Connection to Gira X1"
• Enter the local IP address for the Gira X1 mini server
• When the connection is established, enter the user name and password from the GPA user management
• Click on the OK button

If the remote access is set up on the phone, the control can be run remotely by activating the remote OpenVPN connection access:

• Open the "OpenVPN Connect" app
• Slide the switch from Disconnected to the right (to Connected)
• Once connected, you can start the Gira X1 app and take control of the Gira X1 mini server
