Top answer

There may be one or more masters throughout the system. The total number of tethered devices is 126, irrespective of whether they are transmitters or receivers.

In each PROFIBUS network segment, counting the master and the slaves, there can be a maximum of 32 nodes, connected in a line structure. The beginning and end of each of the segments are provided with active bust termination and they have a continuous power supply.

If more than 32 nodes are required, the network span can be extended by incorporating 4 RS-485 repeaters, thus getting the maximum number of nodes in the overall network is 126 (available addresses are from 0-126).

  • 0 - Reserved for Class 2 master/Engineering tool
  • 1 - Sometimes used for a programming tool, but available as a master or device address
  • 2-125 - Available for master or device addressing
  • 126 - Reserved for the use of devices without address switches. The device must be set to an address <126 before it can be used
  • 127 - Reserved as a broadcast address
