What is difference between Profibus DP and Profibus PA ?
Profibus DP is used for factory control, while Profibus PA is intended for control in inaccessible and hazardous locations.
The main purpose difference is that PROFIBUS PA uses Manchester Encoded Bus Powered (MBP) physical layer, while PROFIBUS DP uses RS-485. Even though the physical layer is different, the protocols are the same.
Because of the RS-485 physical layer, the PROFIBUS DP is more widely used and makes installation, planning, commissioning, and maintenance very easy.
The process automation environments, that typically require slow procedures, are mainly characterized by explosive and hazardous areas that need a higher level of safety. The MBP is intrinsically safe, and PROFIBUS PA will be the suitable solution.
When it comes down to the topology, because of the RS-485 transmission technology, the PROFIBUS DP is typically connected in a line structure with up to 32 nodes in one segment.
On the other hand, PROFIBUS PA because of the MBP transmission technology, can work with basically any topology, line, tree, or combination of both structures.
