What is the difference between PROFINET and Ethernet?

Can you give us a PROFINET and Ethernet comparison? Is it real and possible to compare these two different procotols/standards?

If you ever work with the PROFINET network for sure you will notice Ethernet cabling and maybe equipment that connects to the PROFINET components. But when you start to configure the network, you will specifically work with PROFINET devices and controllers.

Ethernet represents Layer 1 and Layer 2 of the OSI model, defining the electrical signals, how to send and receive messages, and accessing the bus in a Local Area Network (LAN).

PROFINET on the other hand works on the application Layer 7 of the OSI model which at the end is based on the standard Ethernet Layer 1 and Layer 2.

Generally, is very difficult to make a comparison between PROFINET and Ethernet because they are fundamentally different.
